Was a member of the Halifax Three (Nova Scotia trio), The Mugwumps (with Cass Elliot, Zal Yanovsky and Jim Hendricks) in 1964, and The New Journeymen (with John and Michelle Phillips) before his success in The Mamas and The Papas.

He was married to Linda Woodward (married 2 October 1971; divorced in 1978).
