Maria Cristina Mel de Almeida Costa (Rio de Janeiro, March 10, 1964) is a Brazilian singer of contemporary Christian music. She has been nominated for a Latin Grammy four times and was a sixteen-time winner and record holder for nominations and awards at the Troféu Talento. Biography The singer has a degree in literature and studied English and Spanish, but had a troubled adolescence due to family problems. At the age of fifteen, she attempted suicide. But it was at the age of sixteen that the singer converted to Christianity, becoming an evangelical. From then on, he started singing in the choir of the Tauá Baptist Church in Rio. After a while, Natan Brito, the lead singer of the group Banda e Voz, and Isaías Costa, from the group Shaddai, discovered the singer and sent a demo tape to a record company called Bompastor, which released her first LP, entitled Tá Decidido. The singer's first performance was in Belém, Pará. From 1992 until 2005, she released more than 20 albums, as well as having worked for several record companies. On July 4, 2005, she again signed a contract with Line Records and that same year she released the live album As Canções da Minha Vida - 15 anos ao vivo, in celebration of her 15-year career. It featured appearances by Soraya Moraes, Marcelo Nascimento and the Kades Singers. The album was nominated for a Latin Grammy. The album was also released in 2006. In 2006, she was the first Brazilian singer to be authorized to do a project in partnership with Os Vegetais, a prominent project in the USA, releasing the project on CD and DVD (2006) The following year, Cristina released "Alcanzar Tu Corazón" with 11 tracks in Spanish and 2 in English, all of them re-recordings of the singer's greatest hits with new arrangements, produced by Wagner Carvalho, the album once again drawing attention for its well-produced arrangements and Cristina's interpretation of each song. On September 5, 2008, the singer returned to MK Music and in the following years released Ame Mesmo Assim (2009), Clube da Cristina Mel (2010), which was released on DVD the same year, and DVD Karaokê the following year. In the same year, she also released Som do Amor (2011) produced by Paulo César Baruk and Emerson Pinheiro. The album paid tribute to the late singer Denise Cerqueira with a re-recording of the song "Jerusalém e Eu". In the second half of 2013, the singer released a new album entitled Eu Respiro Adoração (I Breathe Worship) on the MK Music label, produced by Rogério Vieira. In July 2014, she left the MK Music label, due to the label's lack of interest in distributing her children's albums. On August 4, 2014, she signed a contract with Sony Music, releasing Fazendo a Diferença, on CD and DVD, with the participation of her daughter Isabela Mel. On May 21, 2019, after five years since her last album for Mk Music, Cristina Mel will release an album entitled "Rompendo o Silêncio" (Breaking the Silence) on digital platforms. E Nos dias de hoje Cristina Mel Lança suas novas canções pela sua nova gravadora Deep Music. São mais de 30 anos de carreira abençoando milhões de brasileiros.
