About

American jazz singer.

Born: March 5, 1937 in Providence, Rhode Island, USA
Died: January 23, 2023 in Stoneham, Massachusetts, USA
Sloane started singing w. local dance band as 14-year old in 1951. After a failed marriage she returned to singing and touring in the late 50's but when that led nowhere she soon found herself working as a secretarial temp. In 1960 she was approached by Jon Hendricks and asked to sub for Annie Ross in Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. On Hendricks's suggestion she appeared on the 1961 Newport Jazz Festival and caught attention from both press and a representative of Columbia Records, leading to her record debut the same year. After two Columbia albums she then slipped into obscurity, working small clubs. In the 70's she was working as a legal secretary and didn't record until 1977. From then on she has recorded frequently for a.m.o. Prestige, Contemporary and especially the Concord label.
