Breakwater

About

Funk / Soul band formed in 1971 in Philadelphia and disbanded in 1980 after leaving [l362]. The sound of Breakwater's music is normally that of slow jams, but they have been known to incorporate rock music and funk styles into their songs. Their manager was [a=Kae Williams] Sr. (Kae’s father) who wrote the late 50’s doo-wop monster “Get a job” by The Silhouettes. The group included keyboard prodigy Kae Williams Jr. (he was 15-year old when he formed the band), lead vocalist and trumpeter Gene Robinson, bassist Steve Green, drummer James “Gee” Jones, Lincoln “Zay” Gilmore on guitar, percussionist John “Dutch” Braddock and woodwinds players Vince Garnell and Greg Scott (some of the initial members originally met at school). Breakwater was signed to Clive Davis’ Arista Records imprint and released two albums: 'Breakwater' (a self-titled album) in 1978, and 'Splashdown' in 1980. Their second album has been referred to as a funk masterpiece. Highlights include "No Limit" and "Say You Love Me Girl". Their song "Release The Beast" regained popularity in 2005 after being sampled by electronic duo [a=Daft Punk] in their hit "Robot Rock" taken from their Human after all album. The band reformed in 2009 with five of the eight original members : Gene Robinson Jr., Lead Vocals, Jimmy Jones, Drums/ Vocals, John "Dutch" Braddock, Percussion, Greg Scott Woodwinds/Vocals, and Steve Green, Bass/ Vocals. Trivia : [a=Gerard Huerta] (the graphic designer/typographer behind the world famous AC/DC & Ted Nugent logos) created/designed their 'Seahorse' logo.
