English bandleader and violinist. Born 15 September 1896 in London, England, UK. Died 11 June 1971 in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, UK. His professional name was officially Bert Ambrose, but he was universally known simply as Ambrose. Ambrose studied music in New York and in his teens played violin in cinema pit orchestras, accompanying silent movies. He was dance band leader at the Embassy Club and May Fair Hotel in the 1930s. Ambrose is credited with discovering singers Vera Lynn and Kathy Kirby. Lynn sang with his band from 1937 to 1940. Ambrose died during a recording of Kirby's television show.
