After being stranded in France due to visa issues, and unable to get back to his band Soft Machine, a young Daevid Allen wanders France gathering a new band (and borrowing a guitar and amp from Errol Flynn’s son along the way). Along with Gilli Smyth he puts together a rather ragtag outfit and begins gigging with them in Paris. It’s 1968 and, after getting mixed up in the student riots, the band escapes first to the south of France and then to Deia in Mallorca – in both those places they recorded the numbers collected under the Bananamoon Band moniker. This is a missing piece of an ever-expanding jigsaw that all you pot-head pixies out there are gonna love, and it goes some way to explaining Allen’s personal vision for Gong.
