Asa Martin

(1900 - 1979) Popular old-time country music recording artist in 1920s - 1930s, very influential on later country and bluegrass performers. Hosted "Morning Roundup" radio program on WLAP in the 1940s, and on this show Martin gave [a=David "Stringbean" Akeman] his nickname. Recordings include "Hot Corn Cold Corn," "Virginia Bootlegger," "Harlan Town Tragedy," and "The Little Box of Pine on the 7:29." Wandered out of the music business but was rediscovered in the 1970s and persuaded to gradually return to recording and performing.
