    Asa Martin

    (1900 - 1979) Popular old-time country music recording artist in 1920s - 1930s, very influential on later country and bluegrass performers. Hosted "Morning Roundup" radio program on WLAP in the 1940s, and on this show Martin gave David "Stringbean" Akeman his nickname. Recordings include "Hot Corn Cold Corn," "Virginia Bootlegger," "Harlan Town Tragedy," and "The Little Box of Pine on the 7:29." Wandered out of the music business but was rediscovered in the 1970s and persuaded to gradually return to recording and performing.
