American (soprano) singer, very popular in 1920s. Born March 21, 1893 Chicago, Illinois. Died March 24, 1982 (aged 89) Los Angeles, California. From childhood, she sang and danced in vaudeville, beginning with her older brother Stanley as Stanley and Aileen. She made her first recordings for the Edison Company on August 12th 1920 My Little Bimbo Down on the Bamboo Isle (Edison Diamond disc 5070). She charted thirteen times as a solo artist and eight time in duets in the U.S. Seven of her solo songs and six of her duets were top 10 hits. Her top solo hit came in 1922 with "Sweet Indiana Home", which hit #2 in the country. "All By Myself" in 1921 and "Everybody Loves My Baby" in 1925 both hit #5. She charted with Billy Murray six times but her biggest duet song came in 1926 "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street" with Gene Austin; it hit #3. “Mamie Jones” was a pseudonym for singer Aileen Stanley who was one of many Caucasian artists to record for Black Swan, “passing for colored” since the label was advertised as featuring only black artists. She appeared in several films when sound films came in.and continued to perform on stage into the 1930s. After losing most of her money in the stock market crash, Stanley moved to London, where she made more records for HMV from 1934 through 1937.
